Introducing Statzen: Content Focused Statistics for Bloggers

September 8, 2008 – 11:50 pm

“What does it do?” is probably the most frequent question any new startup gets asked. We could tell you what Statzen does and even how it does it, but unless you have a deep understanding of the problems it addresses then you may or may not see the utility. So we will save the “what” and “how” for later posts. Instead let’s focus on the “why”.

Why would I want to use statzen?

“We have found the existing statistics and analytics tools do a poor job of addressing the needs of bloggers.”

If you want to know how many people read the post you wrote yesterday, then you will want to use Statzen. That is one of the most basic questions a blogger can have about their blog. The existing products do a poor job of answering that simple question for the following three reasons:

  1. You want to know how many times a post was viewed, regardless of the delivery channel. How many people read the post on your website? How many people read the post in your feed? How many people read the post on another website that aggregates your content? Statzen gives you stats on web and feed attention.
  2. Viewing web stats can be frustrating because a single post may be represented in multiple URLs (i.e. with “www” or without, anchor links for comments, in Google’s cache, etc). Statzen disambiguates these URLs for you so that you no longer have to add them up in your head.
  3. Some pages have multiple posts on them (the home page, category pages, etc). Existing solutions provide no indication about which posts were read. If you publish the entire post on the front page people will read without clicking through to a URL associated with that post. Statzen’s inference tools provide information about individual posts on pages with multiple posts.

If you have been frustrated with existing web analytics tools for your blog, you will want to give statzen a try. Our focus on the content that is being viewed is unique and opens up the doors for a whole new breed of attention analytics like nothing you have ever seen before. One great example is topical analytics.

What topics are your readers interested in?

Again, that is a basic question that bloggers are unable to answer with the existing tools. Statzen captures the tags and categories that you are assigning to your posts (topics defined by the author). This allows us to answer your questions about the topics that your readers are most interested in. We don’t just define topics as the tags and categories that you declared; we also extract key and recurring topics out of the search strings readers are using to get to your posts (topics defined by the readers). This allows you to discover new topical themes that your readers are interested in.
